WHY YOUR CURLS DON’T LAST AND HOW TO MAKE THEM LAST LONGER
One of the questions we hear all the time at Ivory House Salon is, “How do you get curls to last all day?”
The answer usually surprises people.
It’s almost never the curling iron.
Long lasting curls start before you ever wrap a section of hair around the barrel. They’re created by preparation, technique, and the right products working together.
One of the biggest mistakes we see is curling freshly washed, silky smooth hair without any foundation. Clean hair isn’t a bad thing, but hair that’s too soft often struggles to hold a style. That’s why we always build a little texture into the hair before we start curling.
One of our favorite products for this is Davines This Is A Dry Texturizer. We spray it at the roots to create lift and throughout the ends to give the hair a little grip. It helps curls hold their shape longer while creating that effortless, lived in finish everyone loves.
Another mistake is grabbing sections that are too big. While it might save a few minutes, larger sections don’t heat evenly, which means the curl usually falls much faster. Smaller, consistent sections create a stronger, longer lasting curl.
Here’s another tip we swear by behind the chair…
Don’t touch your curls right away.
As tempting as it is to run your fingers through them immediately, hair needs time to cool. We often let curls sit while we finish the rest of the style because cooling is what allows the hair to lock into its new shape.
If we’re looking for even more volume, we’ll set sections in velcro rollers while they cool. It’s a simple technique that creates beautiful lift and helps your style last even longer.
The final step is making sure all of that work stays in place. We finish with Davines This Is A Strong Hairspray, which gives long lasting hold without leaving the hair stiff or crunchy. Your curls still move naturally, but they’re much more likely to make it through the day.
At Ivory House Salon in Dripping Springs, Texas, we always remind our clients that styling isn’t about finding one magic tool. It’s about using the right combination of techniques, products, and professional hair care to help your style last.
If your curls always seem to fall before lunch, don’t assume your hair just won’t hold a curl. Sometimes all it takes is a few small changes to your routine.
The next time you’re in the salon, ask your stylist to walk you through how they create long lasting curls. We’d be happy to share our favorite techniques, recommend the right Davines styling products for your hair, and help you feel more confident styling your hair at home.
Because when you know the “why” behind the technique, recreating it becomes so much easier.
